Fowler's a wonderful writer, but her books are for slow readers. "Sister Noon" is jumpy, dense, and almost requires note-taking. I may read this again before I post. Meantime, here's a pre-quake film of 1905 San Francisco, roughly contemporary with events in this book. A still from that film is at left.
