I count "The Lizzie Bennet Diaries" as my 2013 Austen read

While immersed in Barsetshire society (see post below), I got stuck on "The Lizzie Bennet Diaries," an adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" updated for Our Young People. (I talked about it here with a link to the first webisode.)

The genius of the webisodes is that they stay true to Austen's story arc while adapting story details to life in the digital age. Charlotte and Mr. Collins do not marry (at least it doesn't look like it's going that way), but form a symbiotic business partnership that isn't too far off the Charlotte-Collins marriage in Austen's original. The scandal Lydia inflicts on her family in the webisodes is no less serious in the 21st century than the one Austen offered to 19th century readers in her novel.

The story is told by Lizzie in a series of vlogs (we're on episode 98 right now), about four to six minutes each. An amusing touch is that some characters (e.g., Mr. and Mrs. Bennet) are never seen, but are acted out by Lizzie and her friends. There's also something very Austen-drawing-room about watching people sitting in chairs in front of a camera and gossiping about their relatives and friends.

Another interesting thing about the project is that it was conceived by a couple of guys, Hank Green and Bernie Su, though the project does have women writers on staff. The cast can act competently and are nicely diverse. Sister Jane is a standout of sweetness.

Anyhoo, I usually try to read one Austen every year, but this year I'm counting watching the diaries as my Austen read of 2013.
